How to Change the Chain Case Oil on a Lynx Snowmobile

Proper maintenance of your Lynx snowmobile is crucial for ensuring peak performance on every ride. Replacing the chain case oil for your snowmobile is a key part of this upkeep.

Timing Your Oil Change

At a minimum, your Lynx chaincase oil should be replaced every two years or 6000 km (about 4000 miles). The end of the riding season is ideal, preventing harmful contaminants from sitting inside the chain case while in storage.

If you're covering significant mileage, check the chain case oil levels every 3,200 km (2,000 miles) to maintain optimal performance.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to ensure a precise and efficient oil change:

Tools Required:

- Chain Case Oil such as XPS
- Drain pan
- 4.5mm or 3/16 Allen socket
- Flathead screwdriver
- Torque Wrench
- Funnel
- Rag
- Mechanic’s gloves
- Eye protection

Step-by-Step Guide

1-) Get Set Up

Park your snowmobile on a level surface and remove the tether cord. Take off the right side panel. For easier access beneath the sled, consider using a lift (optional).

2-) Drain the Old Oil

Position the drain pan under the drain plug, located beneath the right-side running board through the hole in the belly pan.

Use the Allen socket to remove the drain plug, allowing the old oil to flow into the pan.

Remove the top fill cap using a flathead screwdriver to speed up drainage.

Tip: Wear mechanic’s gloves and keep a rag handy to avoid mess.

3-) Replace the Drain Plug

Clean the drain plug thoroughly and carefully thread it back into the drain hole by hand. Avoid cross-threading.

Torque the drain plug to 6 N-m (53.1 in-lbs).

4-) Remove the Check Plug

Unscrew the check plug located on the side of the chain case to prepare for refilling.

5-) Add Fresh Chain Case Oil

Using a funnel, pour in fresh chain case oil as specified in your Lynx Operator’s Guide. If you're using XPS Chain Case Oil, the pre-measured amount ensures precision.

Stop pouring once the fresh oil begins dripping out of the check plug hole

6-) Replace the Check Plug and Fill Cap

Reinstall the check plug by hand, ensuring it’s tight and secure. Push the rubber fill cap back into its position.

7-) Clean Up and Inspect

Wipe away any excess oil from the chain case and inspect the area around the drain plug for potential leaks.

8-) Dispose of Used Oil Responsibly

Take the used oil to your nearest disposal station or contact your local municipality for guidance on proper disposal.

With your Lynx snowmobile ready to go, buckle your helmet and relish the responsive, slick performance of your machine!

Why Maintaining Your Chain Case Effortlessly Matters

Regular chain case maintenance not only keeps your snowmobile operating smoothly but protects critical components from wear and tear. Fresh oil ensures your Lynx is always ready for agile riding in unpredictable conditions.
