Lynx Commander RE – One Snowmobile, Many Missions

Timo Veijalainen builds and maintains winter trails for outdoor adventurers. For the job, he trusts the Lynx Commander crossover snowmobile – a tough, reliable workhorse that doubles as a seriously capable recreational sled when the shift ends.

Timo Veijalainen lives and breathes the northern wilderness from his home in Kittilä, Finnish Lapland. He's the man responsible for building and maintaining the winter trails used by fatbike riders and hikers across the terrain surrounding Finland's two biggest ski resorts – Ylläs and Levi. With hundreds of kilometers of unforgiving arctic backcountry as his office and 7,000 kilometers clocked on the sled in work use alone per season, the machine has to be tough. It has to deliver. His choice? The Lynx Commander RE. More than a snowmobile – it's a relentless work partner and an off-shift adrenaline machine.

Timo first got behind the bars of a Lynx Commander eight years ago when he started working on winter trails. He quickly recognized its exceptional ride characteristics and its ability to handle demanding professional use. Since then, trail planning, building, and maintenance have become his full-time calling.

"North of the Arctic Circle, the trail season typically runs from December through April – meaning the sled is in action for over five months a year across all kinds of trail-building, marking, and maintenance tasks. Last season I got my hands on the Commander RE, and it's taken both efficiency and usability to a completely new level", Timo says.

Timo is responsible for building and maintaining 100 kilometers of winter trails in the Ylläs area and 40 kilometers in Levi. The maintenance of narrow routes running through rolling fell terrain is only possible with a snowmobile, ensuring minimal impact on the sensitive fell environment.

When you're breaking a new trail into steep terrain and chest-deep untracked snow, performance isn't optional. The Commander RE has proven itself in the harshest conditions, where a sled is pushed to its absolute limits. The Rotax 900 ACE Turbo R engine delivers relentless torque and instant throttle response – making it easier to get through challenging sections. Opening new trails in deep powder has clearly become faster thanks to the sled’s performance, Timo notes.

"With the turbo engine, we're getting through places that used to be impossible. Last winter, I only got stuck once."

According to Timo, one of the Commander RE's biggest assets is its high-performance, versatile rear suspension. The EasyRide+ rear suspension delivers an exceptional blend of ride comfort, deep snow capability, and towing capacity. The massive engine power transfers efficiently to the snow, even as conditions shift beneath you.

On the job, the Commander RE hauls a drag-plow combination used to pack or clear the trails depending on conditions. The weighted drag is a heavy load – and when plowing, the resistance gets serious. Off the clock, the sled's pulling muscle comes into its own hauling logs, moving heavy loads effortlessly from the forest to the yard.

"The Commander's towing capacity is in a class of its own. Heavy groomers and timber loads follow along with surprising ease. The wide adjustability of the rear suspension simplifies daily trail work and makes it quick to switch from work mode to riding for pure fun," Timo says.

Beyond trail work and hauling logs, the Commander also serves in search and rescue operations. As a trained volunteer, Timo assists authorities in missing person searches and other rescue missions – situations where a reliable, capable snowmobile makes all the difference in brutal winter conditions.

Heavy trail drags, plows, and timber loads move effortlessly behind the Commander RE – according to Timo, its towing capability is in a class of its own.

The large 10.25" touchscreen is, according to Timo, a clear upgrade to the Commander's usability. The easy-to-read display delivers essential information – work hours logged and distance covered – in a single glance on the move. Off duty, the wide map view has proven its worth on Timo's epic wilderness adventures, including spring rides deep into Lapland’s northernmost parts.

"The big, clear screen with solid navigation features has been a real advantage in difficult visibility conditions – riding through blizzards, for example."

The snowmobile accessories have been chosen with purpose and positioned for practicality – every piece of kit has its place and is ready when needed. The LinQ Utility Premium 135 L Cargo Box has proven to be an excellent aid for transporting substantial amounts of equipment. The durable box has withstood heavy use well and enables the efficient transport of various work-related items, such as power tools, a chainsaw, spare parts, food supplies, and spare clothing, as well as safety-related equipment, including a first aid kit and emergency shelter. The stackable LinQ Fuel Caddy has proven highly useful during long work shifts, when refueling stations are far away and additional refueling can be done conveniently in the field. The Heavy-Duty Front Bumper and Auxiliary LED Light Bar mounted to it have absorbed hits from brush and trees, protecting the sled from damage. For Timo, a snowmobile used to be purely a work tool. The Commander RE changed that. Alongside mountain biking, fishing, and ski touring, snowmobiling has become a new way to move through the wilderness and soak in everything winter has to offer.

"Out on the trails, I've caught myself shouting inside my helmet more than once about how insanely good this is. I can barely wait for next winter and whatever new adventures are waiting out there on the Commander."

After his first winter season and thousands of kilometers on the Commander RE, Timo sums it up in one thought:

“The Commander RE has been, above all, a reliable tool for me – one that gets the job done, regardless of the day or the task,” Timo concludes.

The work snowmobile has also become a leisure favorite: the Commander takes Timo on Arctic adventures, including trips to northern Lapland. Despite its large size, Timo describes the Commander RE as agile and comfortable to ride even on long trail adventures.
